The Dresden University of Technology in Germany is developing a sensor-mediated traffic control system that can control traffic signaling depending on flow, and replace the estimated signaling lights.

The system can monitor the flow of traffic on the junctions and will exploit this data by combining various algorithms to transmit the traffic flow information to other traffic signals.

The information will decide the lighting time to permit the vehicles to cross the junction when the signal head shows a green light, ensuring a smoother traffic flow.

The University said this method will allow coordination within the closest junction systems for signaling the traffic according to the flow of the vehicles.

The technology can also replace the existing traffic signaling lights, according to azosensors.com.
