Delhi traffic police have adopted a new traffic update system to regulate traffic during the 2010 Commonwealth Games, being held in the Indian capital city of Delhi this month.

The software-driven system uses internet-based services and Google maps to offer real-time traffic updates through SMS.

The system informs the timings when specific roads are blocked for vehicular movement and enables motorists to avoid the congested roads and take alternate routes.

Police have also unveiled plans to add further information that can be useful for road users such as information about the refuelling stations along the route, garages and other services, according to The Times of India.

It is also in negotiations with private cell phone operators and SMS service providers for full-scale use of the system in traffic management.
