The government of Queensland, Australia, has invited bids from construction companies for the widening of Wrights Creek bridge and straightening the approaches to the bridge.

"Queensland’s government is aiming to double the width of the 15m bridge to ease the traffic congestion and also allow the movement of bigger trucks on the stretch of the highway."

The widening of the Wrights Creek bridge, located on Bruce Highway, south of Edmonton, is being called for after a number of accidents were reported on the bridge.

The upgrade of the bridge is one of the many upgrades that has been scheduled along the 1,700km length of the Bruce Highway, as a part of the fully federally funded A$2.8bn ($2.8bn) capital works programme.

Queensland’s government is aiming to double the width of the 15m bridge to ease the traffic congestion and also allow the movement of bigger trucks on the stretch of the highway.

The government will manage the tender process for the bridge upgrade programme, which is expected to be complete by the end of 2012.

The interested companies can submit their bids until 16 July 2012, with work expected to commence in the coming months.

The preparation of the site, including preliminary earth-works and soil testing, will continue while the major construction contract for the multimillion dollar project is being finalised.
