Brekford, a US-based provider of mobile technology and traffic safety solutions, has been awarded a contract to provide automated speed enforcement services to the Town of Crisfield in Maryland.

The contract involves the installation of Brekford speed cameras, also known as photographic speed-monitoring systems, in school zones within the town limits.

The Crisfield Police Department chief Michael Tabor said that in accordance with legislation passed in 2009, the department has determined that the installation and operation of automated speed-monitoring camera systems can considerably reduce speeding and reckless driving, within school zones.

"Our contract with Brekford should allow us to reduce risks to both students and vehicle drivers in our town’s school zones, while ensuring that our citizens are well-informed regarding the location of the cameras and that the violation citations sent to vehicle owners are fair and accurate," Tabor said.

Under the terms of the contract, Brekford will deploy four camera systems for a period of two years, with an option to renew the contract up four more times for a span of one year each.

"The contract involves the installation of Brekford speed cameras, also known as photographic speed-monitoring systems, in school zones within the town limits."

The new photographic speed-monitoring systems work in conjunction with photographic, video or electronic cameras and automatically detect the speed of vehicles.

The systems then produce photographs, video or digital images of those vehicles that violate speed limits or restrictions, and based on the police review and confirmation of violations, citations will be sent to owners of the vehicles.

According to Brekford, around 80% reductions have been observed in school zone speeding in some of the cities that have partnered with the company during the past couple of years.

The company, headquartered in Hanover, Maryland, currently has contracts with various cities and towns in Maryland, including the City of Baltimore, and is evaluating additional contract opportunities with municipalities in Maryland and other states within the eastern and Midwestern regions of the US.
