ChargePoint, an online network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, has installed networked EV stations in Atlanta, Georgia, US, a move which marks its entry into the city.

Parking services provider Lanier Parking Solutions facilitated the installation of six ChargePoint EV charging stations at locations in Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead, with the location for a seventh charger to be selected in the coming days.

Three of the new EV charging stations are placed at Peachtree Center, while Georgia Pacific Center, Ponce City Market and Prominence in Buckhead each have one new station.

The installation of the EV charging stations is a part of Atlanta’s efforts to expand its electric vehicle footprint.

ChargePoint president and CEO Pat Romano said that the Atlanta’s EV infrastructure has to be ready to cater to the increasing number of electric vehicles, which have become a more attractive alternative due to increasing gas prices.

"The installation of the EV charging stations is a part of Atlanta’s efforts to expand its electric vehicle footprint."

"Atlanta is taking the lead to proactively provide EV charging technology that will allow the city to accommodate future demand, and ChargePoint is proud to partner with Atlanta and other cities across the country to make this EV growth feasible," Romano added.

Currently, the city has more than 750 electric and electric hybrid vehicles registered, with various automakers set to introduce over ten new models in 2013 alone.

ChargePoint, a US-based online network of independently owned EV charging stations, operates in 14 countries.

The company also offers mobile phone applications that provide an easy way to locate stations near any specified address, get turn-by-turn directions, start and stop a charging session directly from a smart phone.
