The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, in partnership with the Dubai police force, is planning to deploy 100 new speed radar systems, in order to monitor speeding on the emirate’s major roads.

These new radar cameras also include traffic lights that enable easy monitoring of drivers who speed up to catch the green light or jump a red light.

This plan is a part of the RTA’s strategy to strengthen its surveillance network by 2015.

RTA Traffic and Roads CEO Maithaa Bin Adai told Emirates 24/7 that 450 speed radars and 230 cameras have been installed in the emirate to monitor traffic signals.

The roads authority has completed 74 pedestrian bridges, with 13 new bridges still under construction.

"450 speed radars and 230 cameras have been installed in the emirate to monitor traffic signals."

The RTA said that the safety of citizens is its priority, and the implementation of these projects has led to more than 30% reduction in the traffic mortality rate in Dubai.

The RTA is also constantly conducting studies of traffic accidents to classify locations that require more monitoring and control.

According to Dubai Statistics Centre, more than 1.5 million speeding offences were identified by radar cameras in 2011, representing a leap of nearly 115,000 on the previous year, in which 1.4 million speeding offences were identified.

The centre also revealed that a total of 19,000 fines were issued for jumping a red light in Dubai, which is 1,200 more than the number of fines issued in 2010.

In the same year, drivers jumping red lights were responsible for 199 accidents, while speeding vehicles caused about 63 accidents, the centre revealed.
