The US State of Hawaii has introduced a new mobile application for the easy location of publically available electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the island group.

The free app, EV Stations Hawaii, provides motorists with the location of EV charging stations and mapping directions across the five Hawaiian counties, Hawaii County, Honolulu County, Kauai County, Kalawao County and Maui County.

With the help of the new app, drivers can search for EV charging stations across Hawaii and for stations that are close to their current location.

Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie said that the new app is an example of the state using new technology to advance the widespread use of EVs.

"Drivers can search for EV charging stations across Hawaii and for stations that are close to their current location."

"Convenience is key to furthering the adoption of EVs, which are part of Hawaii’s clean transportation future and move us toward reducing our dependency on imported oil," Abercrombie added.

The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) director Richard Lim said: "The app is part of a collection of self-help tools our State Energy Office has created to enhance the overall EV experience in Hawaii."

A part of the state Office of Information Management and Technology’s open data movement, the app is a partnership between DBEDT, Hawaii Information Consortium (HIC) and Honolulu Clean Cities.

State Energy Administrator Mark Glick said that the adoption of EVs is a primary element in the state’s aim of 70% clean energy by the year 2030, and the new app will facilitate this by making position of EV charging stations easy to find.

The EV Stations Hawaii app is available for download on Apple and Android smartphones.
