Comba Telecom Systems has completed the implementation of a wireless communications system for Malaysia’s Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART Tunnel).

Used by more than 30,000 vehicles every day, the SMART Tunnel consists of 4km of double-deck motorway and a 9.7km stormwater bypass.

The multi-purpose tunnel, which is an important part of the transport infrastructure, has eased traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur, as well as solved problems related to flash floods.

As part of the project, the company has equipped the tunnel with multi-operator, multi-system 2G / 3G distributed antenna system (DAS) products and solutions.

Comba Southeast Asia operations general manager Eric Ng said the SMART Tunnel is one of the major infrastructure projects in Malaysia.

"The modular design of our multi-system DAS allows us to deploy a cost-effective and rapid deployment solution that is particularly suitable for such scenarios," Ng added.

The SMART Tunnel project has facilitated ubiquitous wireless voice and data experience with seamless handover at high speeds within the tunnel.

Comba Technologies, a wholly-owned Malaysian subsidiary of Comba, is providing full maintenance services for the wireless communications system.

The SMART Tunnel was awarded by the UN Habitat Scroll of Honor Award for its innovative and unique management of storm water and peak hour traffic in 2011.

Comba is wireless solution provider, primarily engaged in the R&D and manufacturing of wireless enhancement products, including RRU, base station subsystems and antennas, and wireless access systems.
