Ogun state in Nigeria has signed contracts, valued at NGN90.3bn ($568m), with four companies for the construction of roads running across three senatorial districts.

Contracts were awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), PW Construction, Hi Tech and Borini Prono & Company. The four firms are expected to complete the construction of eight roads in the next 18 to 24 months.

The latest contracts have been awarded under the government’s urban renewal and infrastructural development programme.

The first phase of the project will cover eight roads, while the second will involve the development of six major roads at the cost of another NGN39.7bn ($250m).

Ogun Works and Infrastructure commissioner Olamikan Adegbite said that overall the government will construct 14 roads, valued at NGN130bn ($818m).

The roads to be developed in the first phase comprise Ilo Awela in Ota, Moshood Abiola Way and Lafenwa/Aiyetoro/Ajebo Road in Abeokuta, and Benin-Shagamu express/Isale Oko junction in Shagamu.

"Contracts were awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), PW Construction, Hi Tech and Borini Prono & Company."

Adegbite noted the government has been cautious in awarding the contracts and has drawn lessons from the success of the Totoro/Sokori/Ita – Eko road construction project.

The administration intends to thoroughly monitor the contracts in order to ensure best practices and strict adherence to the standards required by the state are being followed by the firms.

The second phase of the project will include the construction of Ilara/Ijoun/Egua/Oja-Odan/Ilase Road in Ipokia Local Government Area, Ilishan/Ago-Iwoye Road, Ejinrin/Obalufon/Ibadan Road in Ijebu Ode and Ojere/Adatan/Asero Road in Abeokuta.

Most of the contractors have already begun undertaking preliminary works at the locations.

Meanwhile, Zamfara, a north-western state in Nigeria, has recently launched a 128km road project, estimated to cost NGN15.4bn ($96m).
