Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra), part of India-based conglomerate Reliance Group, has launched a new online recharge facility for smart card users on the Hosur-Krishnagiri road corridor in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The new recharge facility, launched through the company’s Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) HK Toll Road, will help cut commuter travelling time and improve traffic flow.

Reliance Infrastructure CEO Lalit Jalan said that the new facility will allow commuters to recharge smart cards whenever they wish via the internet, removing the need to visit toll plazas and wait in long queues.

"They can now enjoy comfortable and seamless travel without worrying about smart card recharge," Jalan said.

Commuters can use the service by registering on RInfra’s road website, where they will be given multiple toll payment options.

After the payment is completed, users will receive email and SMS alerts, and will also be able to track their transaction history, vehicle details and pass type.

Motorists using smart cards on the Hosur-Krishnagiri corridor are expected to save 35%, compared to normal toll pass users.

RInfra is one of the few road concessionaires in the country to introduce this facility for its commuters.

The company’s other road projects will also implement online recharge facilities in the coming days where consumers will be able to recharge smartcards for multiple toll plazas from a single portal.

With the launch of the recharge facility, RInfra is now closer to the globally prevalent Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system. Once the ETC is introduced, users can recharge their tags using the same online recharge portal for any toll plazas.
