The Government of Victoria in Australia has finalised the design for the makeover of the Melbourne icon, the Swan Street Bridge.

Victoria Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said that the government has selected BKK Architects and awarded them the contract for the architectural design of the bridge.

Donnellan said:  “This design will give Swan Street Bridge a modern makeover without losing its existing charm.

“We’ve heard from the community about how they want the bridge to look and feel and we’re now getting on with creating a world class bridge for a world class city.”

The Labour Government recently announced A$30m ($22.6) for the upgrade the bridge, which includes adding an extra traffic lane and new separated shared paths for cyclists, as well as pedestrians on both sides.

The Victorian Government has shortlisted BMD, Cut & Fill and Seymour Whyte for the upgrading works and invited them to submit tenders.

The officials will award the contract at the end of this year and the construction works is expected to begin from next year.

The upgrade will link the Swan Street Bridge to Royal Botanic Gardens, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Shrine of Remembrance with Rod Laver Arena, AAMI Park, Hisense Arena and the MCG, which is the gateway to Melbourne’s sport and entertainment precinct.

"This design will give Swan Street Bridge a modern makeover without losing its existing charm."

Earlier this year, the government asked the community to help shape the future of the bridge. The feedback received from the public highlighted the important role the bridge plays in Melbourne’s sporting and cultural way of life.

The feedback also shed light on the need to address traffic congestion and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians crossing the bridge.

Upon completion, the upgrade will reduce traffic congestion, improve safety, and provide greater access to the sports and entertainment precinct.
