UK’s Highways England is set to complete work on a two mile section on the A64 at Rillington in North Yorkshire, ahead of schedule.

Two sections of the A64 were being resurfaced as part of a £2m scheme.

Resurfacing of the road between Rillington and West Knapton required three weekend closures but is planned to be completed earlier than the planned deadline.

"Last weekend alone our contractors removed and replaced 4,150t of surfacing material, the largest amount we have laid in a weekend shift in Yorkshire to date."

Contractors of Highways England have replaced more than 6,400t of resurfacing over the past two weekends and replaced 800 reflective road studs as part of the scheme.

Highways England project manager Adeeb Saeed said: “This is great news for drivers who use this part of the A64 as we have cancelled this weekend’s closure which would have closed this section from 8pm on Friday until 6am on Monday.

“Last weekend alone our contractors removed and replaced 4,150t of surfacing material, the largest amount we have laid in a weekend shift in Yorkshire to date.

“Thanks to their hard work it has meant that the impact on drivers has been significantly reduced and we have been able to lift the weekend closures earlier than expected.”

In order to reduce disruption to some drivers, Ryedale District Council also used the closures as an opportunity to pick litter and sweep the carriageway.
