November 2006 saw the German-based company DataCollect GmbH successfully complete a 4-year contract commissioned by the Belgian Road Safety Institute for a nationwide traffic survey.
Initial measurements were taken in 2003; each survey consisted of one week’s traffic data from 150 sites within Belgium. These measurements were all recorded using the industry leading SDR Radar Traffic Classifier developed and manufactured by DataCollect GmbH.
Over the last 4 years the Belgian government has made stringent efforts to reduce the speed related accidents on its roads. The results of the 150 SDR Radar Traffic Classifier traffic surveys have been collated and used to assess the impact of efforts made to reduce speeding.
This has lead to a number of preventive measures, such as an increase in Police enforcement operations and public awareness campaigns through government sponsored advertising on both printed media and TV.
As recorded measurements take place in various speed zones (30, 50, 70, 90 and 120 kph), the requirement for a flexible mobile monitoring system that supports several installation possibilities was paramount.
Therefore, the SDR Radar Traffic Classifier’s ability to measure vehicle Flow, Speed and Classification as well as be covertly installed on intra-urban streets and country roads routes proved invaluable, with both side of road and over bridge mounting the SDR Radar Traffic Classifier provided the ideal solution.
