Traffic video specialist Traficon will take the opportunity of this year’s Intertraffic exhibition in Amsterdam to celebrate its twentieth birthday. Next to that, the company will demonstrate a number of innovations at the show, including a new video image processing unit dedicated to incident detection with Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras.
"We are looking forward to welcoming our customers and other stakeholders of the ITS community to our booth," comments Traficon CEO Lode Caenepeel. "The Intertraffic exhibition in Amsterdam will be a great opportunity to present the impressive track record the company has built up over the past 20 years. We can look back on a great story so far, but we are convinced that the company has an equally interesting sequel to offer in years to come."
Looking back: reliable detection technology
Traficon was founded in 1992, with the intention to become the market leader in the field of video
detection for traffic applications. Over the past 20 years, Traficon has built up a strong market
presence in the field of traffic video detection for application in tunnels, highways, bridges and urban
intersections. The company prides itself on delivering products and solutions that have a very long
lifetime. This is exemplified by the many customers that still rely on Traficon technology today, which
was purchased almost 20 years ago.
Looking forward: new products and opportunities
Traficon will also be demonstrating a number of novelties at Intertraffic Amsterdam 2012.
The first novelty is an addition to Traficon’s range of Video Image Processors (VIP). The new VIP-PTZ is a cost-effective and reliable solution that combines the benefits of video-based incident detection with state-of-the-art video streaming and serial communications for camera control. VIP-PTZ has been designed to add automatic incident detection to pan-tilt-zoom cameras in order to improve road safety and mobility over a much longer viewing range than is possible with fixed cameras. Typical applications for this product include hard shoulder monitoring and highway incident detection. The versatile VIP-PTZ can be combined with PTZ cameras that work either with or without preset positions. In the latter case, VIP-PTZ features automatic smart configuration of detection zones, which results in high detection performance, regardless of camera position.
In terms of pedestrian presence detection, Traficon will demonstrate an integrated pedestrian safety solution for unsignalized crosswalks that combines the company’s field-proven video sensors C-Walk and SafeWalk with on-road warning lights from LED lighting specialist 3i Traffic. The solution, called Safe-2-Walk, makes sure that on-road markers along a zebra crossing are activated as soon as a pedestrian enters a predefined detection zone. This way, Traficon’s sensor technology is enhancing safety and visibility for any vulnerable road user crossing the road.
Intertraffic also coincides with the announcement of the acquisition of UK-based company SUMIT srl Ltd. Started in 2009, SUMIT srl Ltd provides a range of products and services to the traffic control and monitoring industry, and has a strong focus on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. "The acquisition of SUMIT srl fits in our long-term strategy of integrating more intelligent functionalities into one solution," comments Traficon CEO Lode Caenepeel. "With the ANPR camera technology from SUMIT srl, we will be able to combine ANPR with other video detection applications."
