The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) has launched a Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Task Force to develop a national interoperability standard that will allow the vehicle to communicate with each other and other transport users.

The V2X Task Force will explore new technologies and their individual effect on transportation safety, security and interoperability.

Toyota InfoTechnology Center USA Networking Research director John Kenney and Colorado Department of Transportation Advanced Mobility chief Amy Ford will be the co-chairs of this task force.

ITS America president and CEO Shailen Bhatt said: “The sooner we have more connected vehicles on the roads, the sooner we can save more lives and improve mobility.

“The sooner we have more connected vehicles on the roads, the sooner we can save more lives and improve mobility.”

“Toyota’s announcement last week that it will deploy V2X Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) systems (in Toyota and Lexus vehicles) starting in 2021, along with GM’s commitment to V2X DSRC in the 2017 interim model year, was a major step forward.

“New technologies continue to change the transportation landscape, and we hope the task force will build the momentum needed to expand deployment of this lifesaving technology.”

With the advice of its members, ITS America expedited the development of standards to create the current V2X ecosystem in the last decade.

Many ITS America’s members are working or have introduced V2X technology based on the standards that ITS America helped to establish within the Federal Communications Commission.

The group has also advocated for establishing a common nationwide standard for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications, which will drive further innovation.
