US-based Parsons Corporation has secured a contract from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Two to provide design services for an expansion of the state’s freeway traffic management system on I-95 from north of the Jacksonville International Airport to the Georgia state line.

The project covers 17mi and includes various intelligent transportation systems and solutions such as archived data management, automatic vehicle identification, closed-circuit television cameras, dynamic message signs, microwave vehicle detection, and road weather information.

Parsons will design the communications support for the traffic management system, as well as identify and design the individual devices needed to cover the corridor.

"These efforts increase the safety and reliability of roadways for residents, visitors, and the business community alike."

Parsons Group president Michael Johnson said: "Parsons has long been at the forefront of using technology to improve the capacity and safety of roads and highways.

"We are pleased to bring our expertise to this important project on Florida’s key interstate highway, and we applaud FDOT’s commitment to advanced traffic management across the state.

"These efforts increase the safety and reliability of roadways for residents, visitors, and the business community alike."

In June, Parsons announced that it will manage the design and installation of all-lane, dynamic-priced tolling system on a 10-mile part of I-66 in Virginia – from I-495 in the Capital Beltway to US Route 29 in Rosslyn.

Dynamic tolling can adjust toll pricing every five minutes.

This system will help reduce traffic congestion into and out of Washington, D.C.
