A joint venture led by Astaldi, an Italian construction company, and Max Bogl has secured a €100m contract to construct the Brasov-Oradea motorway in Romania.

The contract involves the design and construction of 18km of the Brasov-Oradea morotway.

As part of the contract, the JV will build three viaducts, five overpasses, three flyovers, and one motorway interchange.

“75% of the construction work is financed with European funds while the rest is being funded by the Romanian Government.”

Construction work will commence on 16 May and is expected to continue for 16 months.

Of the 16 months, four months are meant for design and 12 months for construction, reported Theconstructionindex.co.uk.

The National Company of Motorways and National Roads of Romania has awarded the contract for the project.

75% of the construction work is financed with European funds while the rest is being funded by the Romanian Government.

Construction work of the Brasov-Oradea motorway has been plagued with financial disputes for over 10 years, reported Worldhighways.com.

The complete stretch was initially slated to be constructed by US-based Bechtel along with Turkish firm Enka.

This contract was awarded to the firms in 2004. However, costs surged from €2.8bn in 2003 to €4.7bn by 2007. Since then, Bechtel’s work has been cut down drastically.

Astaldi has constructed more than 250km of roads and motorways in Romania.
