Technology company Magna, along with its partner Israel-based Innoviz Technologies, has secured a contract to supply solid-state LiDAR to BMW Group for subsequent autonomous vehicle production platforms.

The financial terms of the deal were not divulged.

Magna Electronics president Kelei Shen said: “We value the opportunity to support a premier brand such as BMW with our innovative technologies in sensors and systems.

“Our strong system capability and expertise at the fundamental vehicle architecture level gives us the ability to provide scalable solutions for different levels of autonomy.”

The LiDAR technology is expected to support Level 4 and Level 5 self-driving systems across various vehicle platforms.

Magna collaborated with LiDAR provider Innoviz Technologies, recognising that the technology can help in achieving suitable levels of performance and safety.

“Our strong system capability and expertise at the fundamental vehicle architecture level gives us the ability to provide scalable solutions for different levels of autonomy.”

Under the collaboration, the automotive-grade, solid-state LiDAR was integrated into Magna’s autonomous driving platform.

The combination of LiDAR, Magna’s Icon Radar, along with other sensors and systems within its MAX 4 suite, will offer a platform for OEM products and future mobility platforms.

Magna introduced MAX4 last year as an integrated and customisable platform that can enable up to Level 4 of autonomous driving.

This solid-state high-resolution LiDAR technology is capable of creating a 3D point cloud of the vehicle’s surroundings in real-time.

The technology can operate under multiple settings, including different weather conditions and multi-LiDAR environments.

Furthermore, the solution delivers a complete computer vision software stack and algorithms that can use 3D vision to provide important driving insights.
