Details of the Roborace series of autonomous cars have been announced, the series is planned to run alongside the FIA Formula E Championship during the 2016-2017 season.

Roborace is expected to be conducted prior to each Formula E race.

It will use the same circuits in major cities across the globe.

"The Roborace series will feature a design by Daniel Simon, a German automotive futurist designer."

Ten teams will participate in the Roborace series  which will run for one-hour over the full championship season.

Each team will have two autonomous cars.

Although the competing teams will have similar electric cars, these vehicles will be equipped with their own artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and algorithms.

The Roborace series will feature a design by Daniel Simon, a German automotive futurist designer.

Simon’s design is different from what has been created for Formula 1. Roboracers will be dependent on data drawn from a huge lineup of sensors and cameras.

Lidar units are equipped with flanks, rear and front corners, and enhanced by ultrasonic sensors. Cameras fitted within front bodywork provide information to the central AI unit.

The Roborace series will commence at the Formula E championship event in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in February 2017.
