Construction work on the new £4.5m Morfa Distributor Road in Swansea, Wales, is set to begin and will link the city centre with Liberty Stadium.

Swansea Council has received £1.5m boost from the Welsh Government’s local transport fund for the project.

The new road will begin from New Cut Road, running adjacent to the River Tawe until it reaches Landore Park-and-Ride.

"The road is essential to attract investment in the area."

According to the council, the new road will attract investment along the banks of the River Tawe, where housing and student accommodations are already being built.

Swansea Council cabinet member June Burtonshaw said: "The road will provide direct access to a number of development sites along the banks of the River Tawe and is essential to attract investment in the area."

The new road will also ease traffic congestion down Neath Road in Hafod, which has been recently suffering from pollution problems.

In addition to £1.5m fund, the council has also received a fund of £300,000 to improve the cycle network around the city centre.

"The council is committed to ensure cycling is a real alternative transport mode in the city centre," Burtonshaw added.

"We will be using the money to upgrade existing routes and develop new cycle paths within the city centre."

The construction of the new distributor road is expected to be completed in three years.
