UK’s Wakefield Council has started a search for contractors to bid for a new £33m road project in West Yorkshire.

The Wakefield Eastern Relief Road will be approximately a 5.5km-long single carriageway, connecting the A642 Aberford Road in the north to the A638 Doncaster Road in the south.

This project will also facilitate a massive urban expansion plan to build 2,500 new homes.

"The construction on the project is expected to begin in April 2015."

The proposed road also has to cross the Wakefield Kirkgate to Normanton railway line and the River Calder.

The design of the bridge is ongoing and it is intended to use a Network Rail E-type bridge supported on piles in each corner.

The 60m-long river bridge will feature steel beams and a concrete deck.

According to the council, construction on the river bridge and road may be delayed as full funding for all works has yet to be approved.

The construction on the project is expected to begin in April 2015.

Up to eight contractors will be shortlisted for the project, and those interested have until 6 August to request participation in the procurement process.
