The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) has installed two electric vehicle (EV) fast chargers on campus for public use.

With the support of Nissan and ABB, the two new UWM charging stations mark the first EV fast-charge stations in Milwaukee County and will increase the number of fast-charge stations in the state to four. ABB has a station at its New Berlin facility and another is available in Madison.

UWM’s two new stations can charge EVs in 30mins-90mins and are an addition to the university’s other two AC charge stations, which take between four and eight hours to charge a vehicle.

The plug-in EV charge stations will work with the Nissan LEAF and Mitsubishi i-MiEV, and can charge a Nissan LEAF to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.

"This project is an important milestone for both the university community and the greater Milwaukee region."

Nissan EV sales and infrastructure strategy director Brendan Jones said that the company is the EV sales leader with more than 50,000 LEAFs on American roads today.

"Nissan is also making substantial investments in EV infrastructure such as these new fast chargers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to support EV drivers in markets across the United States," Jones said.

ABB electric vehicle charging infrastructure business programme manager Andy Bartosh said: "We see fast charging technology supporting electric vehicle adoption rates all over the world, so this project is an important milestone for both the university community and the greater Milwaukee region."
