Governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick has broken ground on Tyringham Road reconstruction project in Lee, a town in Berkshire County.

The project involves rebuilding of two miles of Tyringham Road from the Tyringham town line to Route 102, a move which will boost economic opportunities in the town and the surrounding communities.

Governor Patrick said that the state is committed to investing in transportation improvements to create growth throughout the Commonwealth.

"This is just one of many projects statewide that will enhance safe travel on our roads and bridges."

"Tyringham Road is an excellent example of this commitment and will benefit area residents and visitors for years to come," Patrick said.

The $4.4m project is a collaborative effort between Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDoT) and the community of Lee, with the latter funding the design portion of the project.

The work under the scheme includes widening the roadway, drainage improvements, as well as the installation of new retaining walls, guardrails and traffic controls.

In addition, the project includes the reconstruction of the Tyringham Road and Meadow Street intersection, and is scheduled to be complete for spring 2016.

MassDoT highway division administrator Frank DePaola said these long-awaited improvements in Lee will provide better access to dozens of area businesses and connect commuters to the Massachusetts Turnpike.

"This is just one of many projects statewide that will enhance safe travel on our roads and bridges," DePaola said.
