The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi has introduced the AED75m ($20m) Intelligent Traffic Control System in all signalised intersections of Mohammed bin Zayed City.

As part of the project, intelligent and integrated traffic/pedestrian signals, as well as a traffic video surveillance system have been installed in the 40 intersections of the city.

The new traffic control system, which completed its deployment phases recently, is expected to cut down recurring congestions, boost safety levels for all road users and help improve traffic.

"This innovative system enables traffic signals to provide real-time response to traffic via an advanced central control system."

The system also ensures faster responses to non-recurring congestions and has various environmental advantages such as lowering down vehicle level of fuel consumption, noise and carbon dioxide emissions.

Abu Dhabi DoT Traffic Management and Technology (TMT) acting director Hamad Adel Al Afeefi said: "This innovative system enables traffic signals to provide real-time response to traffic via an advanced central control system that is installed in all Mohammed bin Zayed City intersections.

"The system is also linked to advanced CCTV networks and ground sensors that have been deployed in the city."

The system evaluates real-time traffic based on previous data and projected traffic volumes using an internal simulation system and features a special ability to run and implement signal control programmes in response to traffic data.

According to DoT, traffic signals network timing and performance can also be improved while reducing the time spent on each trip.

Prior to taking up the project, the DoT collaborated with the Abu Dhabi department of municipal affairs, as well as followed studies and field visits to many cities worldwide.

The agency has also cooperated with several government entities, including the Abu Dhabi Municipality, the General Command of Abu Dhabi Police and Abu Dhabi Distribution.
