Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) in the US has awarded the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway project to a joint venture (JV) led by US-based engineering and construction firm Fluor.

The design-build-maintain project is the first of its kind undertaken by ADOT and the first freeway project under Arizona’s public-private-partnership statute.

Located in Phoenix, the project will be the largest highway project in the state after its completion.

Work on the 22-mile roadway is expected to commence in the first quarter of this year, with an aim to start operating the lanes from early 2020.

"Working in partnership with ADOT to reach contract award is a significant milestone to move this important project forward."

The Connect 202 Partners JV is a design-build and maintenance partnership comprising Fluor Enterprises, Granite Construction, Ames Construction, Parsons Brinckerhoff as the lead designer, and DBi Services as the joint maintenance partner.

Connect 202 Partners and Fluor’s infrastructure business project director Walter J Lewis III said: "Working in partnership with ADOT to reach contract award is a significant milestone to move this important project forward.

"We are pleased Connect 202 Partners was awarded the project as we believe our team provides the most innovative, safe and cost effective approach for our client ADOT."

After its completion, the roadway will feature four lanes in each direction, of which three lanes will be used for general purpose, while one will serve as the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane.

Fluor and DBi Services will be responsible to maintain the lanes for 30 years.
