Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) Government has opened tenders for stage two of the A$114m ($88m) upgrade of Narellan Road in Western Sydney.

The Narellan Road upgrade will include creation of a 6.8km-long six-lane road between Camden Valley Way and Blaxland Road.

The Australian and NSW Governments have respectively committed A$53m ($41m) and A$61m ($47m) to the road upgrade.

Over the next two decades, Western Sydney is set to grow from two million to three million people and the infrastructure upgrades are being carried out to create thousands of jobs and support the needs of residents and businesses in the region.

"This is yet another indication we are wasting no time delivering our joint A$3.6bn Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan and supports major works already underway."

Australian Assistant Minister for Infrastructure Jamie Briggs said: "This is yet another indication we are wasting no time delivering our joint A$3.6bn Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan and supports major works already underway, including Narellan Road Stage One, Bringelly Road and Werrington Arterial."

The stage two upgrade will deliver significant benefits to Western Sydney motorists and it marks the final stage of the Narellan Road Upgrade.

The upgrade will deliver around 80% of the overall works and will include widening 5.4km of the 6.8km project to six lanes.

NSW minister for roads, maritime and freight Duncan Gay said: "The upgrade will also remove two notorious bottlenecks by widening the southbound on-ramps from the Hume Motorway and installing traffic lights at Kenny Hill Road to improve peak hour traffic flow along the Narellan Road corridor.

"Stage Two will connect to the Stage One upgrade, which is progressing well and includes installing additional right turn lanes and access points to the TAFE/University of Western Sydney, removing congestion at this key pinch point."

Narellan Road is a major link between the Hume Motorway, the Northern Road and the University of Western Sydney.

The project will also include a new purpose-built response facility, which will be installed on Narellan Road, in order to improve accident response times on Narellan Road and the Hume Motorway and ensure traffic is returned to normal sooner.

In order to improve safety for local residents, a new cable-stayed pedestrian bridge will also be installed over the Hume Motorway on the southern side of the existing bridge.

Stage one of the Narellan Road upgrade was initiated in July 2014 and will be completed in 2016, while the stage two would start next year and expected to be completed in 2019.
