East Road

The UK Highways Agency has announced an investment of up to £28.5m in road improvement projects by the end of March, which will be beneficial for drivers in the east of the country.

According to the agency, the completion dates for the works are said to change depending on the length of each scheme.

As part of the road improvement project, the primary focus will be on improving safety and increase the capacity of roads to help ease congestion across the busiest roads in the east.

The Highways Agency will have invested up to £52.4m in roads renewal in the region, as well as £7.6m in renewing structures, £2m in technology and £28.5m in improvement work by March-end.

"This is really good news for road users across the east because it will ultimately mean less congestion, more reliable journey times and improved safety."

Highways Agency east regional director Catherine Brookes said: "This is really good news for road users across the east because it will ultimately mean less congestion, more reliable journey times and improved safety.

"Vast amounts of money are being invested in roads, that inevitably means more roadworks, but for every scheme we work on there will be an improvement for drivers."

Works are said to have started on the pinch-point projects on the A1 roundabout at Black Cat, A14 Histon to Girton, A1(M) at Welwyn and the A1/A47 Wansford since April.

Other road works include resurfacing the A14 westbound between Junctions 31 and 26.

On the A120 at Pellens Corner, average speed cameras have been installed and resurfacing improvements have begun on the A421 Bedford southern bypass.
