Highways England is set to begin a £1.2m project to upgrade a five-mile stretch of the A1 near Berwick, Northumberland, UK, on 15 September.

The project involves resurfacing the section of road from the B6525 Oxford junction to Scremerston, where the A1 meets with the A1167.

In addition, the government-owned company will replace 13 roads, as well as road markings and 425 road studs, as part of the scheme that will require a temporary 40mph speed limit through the roadworks.

"When complete, this project will prolong the overall life of the carriageway, and improve visibility and safety."

Highways England project manager Steve Bishop said: "We recognise this is a busy stretch of road and so the work will be done in three phases using a combination of weekend and overnight closures to minimise the disruption where possible.

"When complete, this project will prolong the overall life of the carriageway, and improve visibility and safety."

As part of the first phase of work, which runs from 18 to 21 September, the A1 between East Ord roundabout and Scremerston junction will be completely closed.

‘No waiting’ restrictions will be placed on the main road through Scremerston to ensure there is plenty of space for vehicles to pass through safely, and the traffic would be diverted through Scremerston village and Tweedemouth.

Work under the project is scheduled to be completed by early November.

The company will also start work to replace important bridge components on the M25 in Hertfordshire this month.

Scheduled to be carried out in two phases between Junction 16 for the M40 and Junction 17 at Maple Cross, the work will involve the replacement of bridge expansion joints that have reached the end of their serviceable life.

Highways England will also undertake additional work to replace expansion joints on the M25 in Kent later this year.
