Indra Sistemas has been awarded a €25m contract by Coviandes to implement the traffic management technology in Colombia’s Bogota-Villavicencio dual carriageway.

The contract involves the design, installation and intelligent traffic systems, along with the control and communications systems for the motorway’s 45 new kilometres.

Indra’s technology will control its 18 tunnels, 41 bridges and three overpasses. This will enable doubling the roadway along nearly one third of the motorway, allowing commuters to travel in two queues in each direction.

A new operations control centre in Naranjal will be integrated with the currently operational Boquerón and Buenavista control centres, as well as manage the traffic in the eight sectors of the extension.

The Naranjal centre will feature Indra’s Horus integrated roadway and tunnel management solution, which facilitates centralised management of various systems installed in the new tunnels.

Indra will install automatic incident detection systems along the entire dual carriageway, enabling immediate reaction to events that could endanger safety or traffic.

A video surveillance system with automatic accident detection will also be installed, along with air quality measurement, incident detection, weather station equipment and various alarms, which will be activated in the event of an emergency.

The solution implemented by Indra also includes speed meters and variable message panels that will offer drivers real-time information on road conditions, speed limits and incidents.

Tunnels will be equipped with visibility sensors, an artificial lighting system, an emergency and evacuation system, as well as backup power systems and generators.

The Bogota-Villavicencio motorway handles more than 1,200 vehicles carrying hazardous goods every day.

With the latest development, operators will be able to control the status of the motorway at all times and have access to real-time information for decision-making.
