Spanish infrastructure group Ferrovial has secured a $309m contract to widen two highways in Texas, the SH 146 in Houston and IH-10 in San Antonio.

The contract was secured through Webber, a subsidiary of Ferrovial Agroman since 2005.

Under the contract, SH 146 will be widened to six lanes along a 4.36-mile (7km) stretch between Red Bluff Road and SH 96, south-east of Houston. The $201m SH 146 contract also includes the construction of a 3.8km bridge over Galveston Bay.

“The IH-10 contract will include the widening and upgrade of the main lanes, as well as the addition of two lanes to the existing four-lane road between IH-410 and Loop 1604.”

Work on the SH 146 will begin in January and is slated to for completion within five years.

Expansion of the SH 146 is crucial for Texan authorities and citizens as the road serves as an official hurricane evacuation corridor.

The IH-10 contract will include the widening and upgrade of the main lanes, as well as the addition of two lanes to the existing four-lane road between IH-410 and Loop 1604, south-east of San Antonio.

The Ferrovial Agroman subsidiary will also build four new bridges and widen an existing bridge under the IH-10 contract.

Construction work will begin in October next year, expected to be completed within 26 months.

Last year, Webber was awarded two contracts worth €292m ($343m) for widening US 281 and I-45 in Texas.

Additionally, Ferrovial Agroman was also awarded a contract to build an 85km section of Houston’s Grand Parkway in the north-east of the Greater Houston area in Texas.
