Italian car manufacturer Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is reportedly considering joining hands with Samsung Electronics, a South Korean electronics company.

The Italian firm has been looking for a technology partner to develop autonomous cars.

Fiat Chrysler chief executive officer Sergio Marchionne was quoted by Bloomberg as saying: “We have a very good relationship with Samsung, both as a supplier and potential strategic partner.”

In March this year, Marchionne approached Apple with an offer to assemble cars. In May, a cooperation project was announced with Alphabet Inc’s Google’s driverless vehicles.

"We have a very good relationship with Samsung, both as a supplier and potential strategic partner."

The South Korean electronics company is said to have been negotiating with the Italian car manufacturer to purchase some or Fiat’s entire car-parts unit Magneti Marelli.

Samsung is especially interested in Magneti Marelli’s in-car entertainment, telematics and lighting business, Bloomberg reported, citing the sources.

A Milan-based analyst for Mediobanca Massimo Vecchio was quoted by publication as saying: “Marchionne is trying to pass the message that he is not interested in a straight sale.”

Vecchio added that the latest development could be seen as to 'use Marelli as a common platform to develop self-driving cars with Samsung'.
