Kapsch TrafficCom Australia has received a contract to replace the old road tolling system for Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel in Australia.

Kapsch TrafficCom Australia is a subsidiary of Austria-based provider of intelligent transportation systems Kapsch TrafficCom.

The two structures are operated by the New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).

"It is about a better use of existing infrastructure and a reduction of visual disturbance."

Under the terms of the contract, Kapsch TrafficCom Australia will not only be responsible for deploying a new tolling system but will also maintain and support it over the next five years.

Kapsch TrafficCom COO Andre Laux said: "We are proud to add this worldwide known bridge in Sydney Harbour to the references we already have with the Golden Gate or the Oresund Bridge.

"Especially exciting for us is that our technology both fulfils a practical, as well as an aesthetic purpose.

"It is about a better use of existing infrastructure and a reduction of visual disturbance."

At present, the Sydney Harbour Bridge uses an automated solution deployed in the existing manual toll plazas that were set up in the days when tolls were paid in cash.

Kapsch TrafficCom will replace the old toll plazas with its new tolling system, improving the traffic flow on the bridge.

The Sydney Harbour Tunnel, on the other hand, will be upgraded in line with the latest tolling technology.

The subsidiary will deploy the latest tolling technology based on the company’s single gantry multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) platform as well as Next Vehicle Detection and Classification (N-VDC) solution.

Expected to be operational by early 2017, the new tolling system will be installed either inside or near the existing Sydney Harbour Tunnel Operations Centre in North Sydney.

The contract value for the project is more than $11.2m.
