Virginia’s Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) in the US has awarded a $6.3m contract to EV Williams to carry out road improvements in Accomack County.

The scope of work under this contract includes widening Route 709 (Horntown Road) between US 13 (Lankford Highway) and Route 679 (Fleming Road) in the village of Horntown.

The project, which will be for a length of about 3.99 miles, is in the Hampton Roads District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

"The project is also using full-depth reclamation (FDR) of the existing roadway."

The Route 709 is classified as a rural major collector and the existing typical section includes two 8ft travel lanes with variable width shoulders.

The improvements to be carried out on this road include two 11ft travel lanes with 6ft graded shoulders, as well as upgrades for drainage, signs and pavement markings.

The proposal also includes 2ft of the graded shoulder paved to improve bicycle accommodations along the project corridor.

The project, which would improve safety by addressing lane width, shoulder width, and horizontal and vertical alignment deficiencies along Route 13 in Accomack County, is scheduled to be completed in June 2017.

As part of the project, new stormwater management ponds will be excavated, a new storm drain will be installed and the road will slightly change alignment and be completely repaved.

The company said that the project is also using full-depth reclamation (FDR) of the existing roadway.

The CTB has spent $629.3m in major contract awards so far this year.
