Precision Traffic and Safety Systems has signed a three-year contract to provide traffic controllers to the city of Knoxville, Tennessee, US.

The company specialises in manufacturing products and solutions for intersection management, communications and safety for the intelligent transportation industry.

Under the deal, the company will install advanced traffic controller technology called Trafficware 980 ATC.

These controllers will also help in the future of an advanced traffic management system (ATMS) that will enable the city to control the complete system from a central location or remotely by technicians in the field.

Precision Traffic and Safety Systems president Eric Seabrook said: "This is a great start to what we know will be a real push for the city toward advance traffic control and management moving everyone in the city safely and more efficiently."

Future plans would also include features like transit priority, flashing yellow arrows and adaptive traffic management to improve the traffic system across the city.

The contract also includes long-term service and support to the city’s traffic engineering department for infrastructure improvement, advancement in effective travel times, safety and more efficient city maintenance.

City of Knoxville traffic engineer Ernie Pierce said: "In a time when cost savings is critical, Precision Traffic provided the most cost-effective solution for the city."
