I-95 Corridor

Engineering and technology firm Timmons Group announced that its intelligent transportation systems (ITS) team has conducted a technology assessment and fields review for development an alternative to the US Route 1 corridor in Stafford County, Virginia.

The firm has been awarded an on-call contract for traffic engineering services by Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), which includes the Richmond and Fredericksburg District.

From 2011, Timmons Group team has completed more than 100 tasks orders for corridor studies, intersection improvements, design and review of traffic signals.

“This project is the first of several arterial corridors to be evaluated as part of VDOT’s Smart Road Technology Program.”

The orders also include roundabout evaluations, roadway safety improvements, guardrail evaluation, lighting studies, and traffic engineering related studies.

The recent survey conducted by the ITS team evaluated several potential improvements along the US Route 1 corridor, which includes improvement in corridor operations, signal communication upgrades, use of CCTV cameras, emergency vehicle pre-emption, conflict monitors and uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

The team will also look into the previously created incident management plans and integrated corridor management plans.

Timmons Group senior ITS consultant Martha Morecock Eddy said: “This corridor will benefit from advanced communications and technologies to enhance corridor operations, safety, and help reduce congestion throughout this stretch of the I-95 corridor.

“This project is the first of several arterial corridors to be evaluated as part of VDOT’s Smart Road Technology Program, and we look forward to contributing to this effort.”
