South Korea-based construction and engineering firm Samsung C&T has secured KRW882.6bn ($785.9m) contract to build a 12.9km section of WestConnex motorway in western Sydney, Australia.

The latest contract has been awarded by Sydney Motorway Corporation established by the New South Wales Government in Australia.

With the latest contract win, the Samsung Group’s construction arm Samsung C&T will be able to participate in all three stages of WestConnex construction project.

Under the contract, the Korean company will build the underpass and an annex in the third stage of the project in Australia.

The contractor is aiming to complete construction work by June 2023.

“The motorway will extend the M4 in twin underground tunnels between Homebush and Haberfield and double road capacity along the M5 East corridor with underground tunnels.”

Samsung C&T  owns a 33.3% stake in the WestConnex project and was involved in the first and second stage of the project to build a 33km motorway.

The company participated in the first stage of a $680m contract completed in 2015. For the second stage, the company formed a consortium with Australian and Spanish companies to win a $2.8bn contract with a 30% share.

WestConnex motorway is part of an integrated transport plan to improve transport in Sydney.

The motorway will extend the M4 in twin underground tunnels between Homebush and Haberfield and double road capacity along the M5 East corridor with underground tunnels running between St Peters and Kingsgrove.

WestConnex is an underground motorway scheme and a joint project of the New South Wales and Australian governments.

It involves the widening and extension of the M4 Western Motorway, building a new section for the M5 Motorway, as well as a new inner western bypass of the Sydney CBD connecting the M4 and M5.
