IT services provider Wipro has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India-based geospatial services firm Genesys to develop maps and other solutions for autonomous vehicles.

Under the MoU, Genesys will use its core expertise for the development of high-definition (HD) maps and content.

Navigational and control technology will be developed by Wipro for autonomous system and smart mobility companies.

Initially, the companies developed a HD map of the Wipro campus in Bengaluru, which enabled the company’s pilot vehicle to drive autonomously around the campus.

“This partnership enhances Wipro’s offering in the autonomous system market and reinforces our ability to support the initiative of our global customers.”

Wipro chief technology officer Sanjiv told media sources: “Wipro’s partnership with Genesys will further accelerate the deployment of these solutions in the autonomous system space.

Recently, Genesys created HD maps for 1,200km of road and street network for an autonomous driving project within a retirement community.

Genesys senior vice-president Rajendra Tamhane was quoted by equitybulls.com as saying: “We are glad to partner with Wipro for developing HD Mapping for autonomous driving. HD mapping for autonomous driving is a $10bn opportunity, which is here and now.

“Every autonomous vehicle sold will have approximately $225 worth map content. With two decades of experience in the Geospatial technology and being pioneers in state-of-the-art LiDAR technology in India, we understand the mapping business better than anybody else. This partnership with Wipro will strengthen our presence in the autonomous system space.”
