The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has commenced work on a SMART highway project on I-80.

As part of the $79m Safety, Mobility and Automated Real-time Traffic Management (SMART) Corridor project, the initial phase covers installation of a network of integrated electronic signs and ramp meters on a 20mi stretch from the Carquinez Bridge to the Bay Bridge.

Almost 270,000 vehicles per day travel on the highway, which in turn has made it one of the most congested routes in the state.

"The SMART Corridor will improve driver safety, travel time and cut down accidents and congestion."

Caltrans will activate elements of the project in phases so that drivers will have enough time to adjust to the new system.

The most familiar aspects will be rolled out first. Final activiation of all elements will be done either in August or September.

The SMART Corridor will improve driver safety, travel time and cut down accidents and congestion.

The project aims to provide real-time traffic information through variable speed signs and blocked lane signs that will enable drivers to make informed decisions in the event of an incident.

For developing I-80 SMART corridor project Caltrans partnered with the Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC), the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) and the West Contra Costa County Transportation Advisory Committee (WCCTAC).
