Indra in partnership with Esteio and Dataprom has been awarded a €15m intelligent urban transport and mobility contract by the Brazilian city of Curitiba (Paraná).

The project marks the largest contract obtained by Indra in the intelligent urban mobility and transport sector.

Indra and its partners will expand the urban traffic management services across the city, and equip it with new intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and an operations support system (OSS) for 2,500 public buses.

In 2010, Indra together with Esteio, implemented its Hermes urban traffic management system in Curitiba in order to manage two of the primary areas that organise metropolitan traffic.

The latest project expands this service to the entire city, expanding the traffic lights it controls from 48 intersections to more than 600.

The project also comprises new ITS systems such as variable message panels to inform drivers, traffic detectors, a video surveillance system and video detection.

After the integration with the Hermes system, the new ITS features will allow for real-time management of mobility by generating dynamic traffic plans that change as with traffic conditions.

"The project marks the largest contract obtained by Indra in the intelligent urban mobility and transport sector."

With the help of the new ITS features, congestion situations can be anticipated and alternative plans can be established using a microsimulation model based on predictive algorithms.

This will enable the project to improve safety, optimise traffic flow and cut travel times, while reducing costs and the environmental impact.

Indra will also expand its traffic light priority system to the Pinheirinho corridor.

The system, which is based on the geo-referential analysis of the vehicle’s position, reduces travel times of public transportation and promotes its use for a more sustainable mobility.

The Indra’s system connects GPS system on each bus with the traffic light control centre in order to change the time the lights are green, giving priority to public transportation.

It also allows analysing of all the bus routes, identifying critical intersections for priority, locating optimal points for improving travel times and defining the appropriate actions for each intersection, linking them to the previously defined routes.
