Qatar public works authority Ashghal has announced tenders for four road improvement contracts for a total value of QAR100m ($27.5m).

The tenders have been announced as part of efforts to provide an environment for the growth of Qatari companies. The agreements are in line with the objectives of the ‘Qualification of Small-Scale Contractors’ initiative that launched in January 2018.

The tenders for the new four contracts are part of the second phase of the Qualification of Small-Scale Contractors initiative.

The initiative is intended to allow Qatari investors in the construction sector to implement small projects that qualify them to be a part of the country’s strategic projects in the future. This is also intended to contribute to the local economy.

The first contract is for road improvement works in Al Shamal Area – Phase 4A, covering several areas in Al Shamal, Al Khor and Al Thakhira municipalities.

The second contract is a road improvement project in Greater Doha-Phase 6B, which includes several areas in Doha and Al Rayyan municipalities.

"Project works are scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2019 and due to be completed within 540 days."

While Zone 90 to 95 – Phase 6B is the third contract for road improvement works in the south of Greater Doha. Works will cover several areas within Al Wakrah municipality, the fourth contract involves road improvement works in Al Rayyan Area – Phase 6B, covering several areas within Al Rayyan municipality.

Project works are scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2019 and due to be completed within 540 days.

Works include grading, road pavement, construction of pedestrian lanes, as well as ways to improve traffic safety such as installation of directional and traffic signs and road markings.

Ashghal said that it will close the tenders for these projects on 19 May.

The Small-Scale Contractors initiative encourages Qatari companies to participate in roads projects even if they do not have experience in this field.

Under the initiative, training will be provided to new contractors and they will also be familiarised with the best practices for project implementation.
