Transport infrastructure services provider Downer Group has won a A$130m ($94.37m) contract to carry out road maintenance work in Tasmania, Australia.

Awarded by the Department of State Growth, the four-year State Road Network Maintenance Services contract covers the North West Region of Tasmania.

The North West Tasmania road network comprises 2,450km roads under management, which includes sealed and unsealed roads and bridges.

As custodian of the network, Downer will be responsible for providing all network management and maintenance services.

“Sutherland Shire Council and Downer collaborated with companies Close the Loop, RED Group and Plastic Police to build a road in the Sydney suburb of Engadine.”

The contract also includes planning and delivery of maintenance and improvement works, roadside clearing, and emergency response management.

Downer Group also won the Five Key Bridge Structures Operational and Maintenance Contract in the southern part of Tasmania, as well as a three-year VicRoads Western Region road network management contract in Victoria.

The company will deliver maintenance services of roadside and structural assets in Western Metropolitan Melbourne. The latest agreement replaces VicRoads previous Western Region contract, which Downer held for a period of eight years.

Recently, Sutherland Shire Council and Downer collaborated with resource recovery and recycling companies Close the Loop, RED Group and Plastic Police to build a road in the Sydney suburb of Engadine.

As a result, the partners used materials from about 176,000 plastic bags and packaging, as well as glass from almost 55,000 bottles, to construct the road in New South Wales.
