Graham Construction has secured a contract from Cheshire East Council in the UK to deliver the Congleton link road scheme.

Serving as the civil engineering firm, Graham is expected to start construction of the £90m project by the end of the year, with the road opening in 2020.

Cheshire East Council selected Graham as the lead contractor following a competitive tender process with a number of bidders participating.

Under the contract, the company will be responsible for constructing two road bridge crossings and two underpasses. It will also implement comprehensive environmental mitigation and conservation measures to protect the wildlife and woodland in the region.

“The Congleton link road represents another major highways scheme in the ongoing programme of infrastructure development across the borough.”

The 5.5km-long road will connect important housing and development sites. It will also decongest traffic in the town centre and improve east-west connectivity.

Upon becoming operational, the road will join the A536 Macclesfield Road to the north with the A534 Sandbach Road to the west. This will improve travel between Macclesfield, Congleton, and the M6.

Cheshire East Council environment cabinet member Don Stockton said: “I am pleased to be able to announce that the council has appointed Graham Construction to build the Congleton Link Road.

“The Congleton link road represents another major highways scheme in the ongoing programme of infrastructure development across the borough.

“This will help to unlock and support further economic growth, new investment and jobs and business opportunities for the area.”

Cheshire East Council is awaiting final funding approval from the Department for Transport.
