Iteris will use its technology to improve safety and mobility for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians throughout Modesto.

In the programme’s first phase, the company will install 240 detection systems at 60 key junctions in the city.

Iteris said that the two-year contract, with a total potential value of $3.3m, has the option to be extended for two more years.

The all-in-one Vantage Vector detection sensor combines video and radar for stop bar and advance zone detection. The technology includes radar sensing technology to cover the dilemma zone.

The dilemma zone is defined as the point where a driver approaching a yellow traffic light needs to make a decision either to stop and risk a rear-end collision or to proceed into the junction, potentially running a red light and risking a right-angle crash.

Iteris sales and customer success vice-president Mark Nogaki said: “This new contract, which is a testament to the spirit of innovation at the City of Modesto, demonstrates increasing demand for Iteris’ leading solutions for the smart mobility infrastructure management market.

“It underscores the city’s commitment to a technology framework that will serve the community for decades to come.”

The Vantage Vector hybrid detection system will help the City of Modesto to differentiate between vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians to improve traffic flow as well as enhance safety for all road users.

It also offers data for smart mobility applications, automated traffic signal performance measures software and adaptive traffic control systems.

The contract was given to Iteris in support of Modesto’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan focus of Governance and Service Delivery, as well as its Smart City Strategy for this year.

Last month, Rutgers University chose Iteris to support a transport initiative led by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and Middlesex County.

The university’s Centre for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) will use the company’s expertise to design and implement the Middlesex County – Smart Mobility Testing Ground (MC-SMTG).
