US-based software solutions company Iteris has been awarded an intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and traffic signal synchronisation contract by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

The $500,000 project will involve modifying and modernising existing traffic signals with advanced traffic signal systems, as well as signal coordination and timing (SCAT) improvements at key signalised junctions.

The SCAT improvements will involve data collection, data analysis to generate optimal signal operation plans with existing and modified signal equipment, implementation and evaluation.

The company intends to begin the ITS and traffic signal synchronisation project immediately.

Iteris regional vice-president Scott Carlson said: “We are proud to support IDOT’s goal of improving the safety and mobility of Illinois’ road users by embarking on this traffic signal modernisation and synchronisation project.

“This initiative represents the continued expansion of Iteris’ ITS and traffic signal coordination services in the Midwest, and will ultimately help to increase the value and effectiveness of the region’s existing transportation infrastructure, while also improving air quality and reducing fuel consumption.”

Iteris will provide second-phase engineering services associated with the preparation of plans, special provisions and estimates for traffic signals and/or ITS projects.

The company will also be responsible for system interconnect design, varying communication systems, developing IP addressing schema and emergency contract plans.

With this contract, Iteris expands its current traffic engineering and smart mobility work to another IDOT district, representing more than $3m from contracts awarded since January 2019.

Last week, the company secured a $3.5m contract to work on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT’s) I-10 Broadway Curve improvement project in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Earlier this month, it was given a three-year contract to improve traffic lights in Texas by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
