International Road Dynamic (IRD), a Canadian technology company, has secured a weigh station maintenance contract from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

According to terms of the contract, which is worth $3.37m, IRD will be responsible for maintaining and maximising performance of the weigh-in-motion (WIM) network, which is used for the protection of highway infrastructure from damage caused by overweight trucks.

This system will help the highway authorities to enforce size and weight laws, and to meet federal goals and requirements.

"IRD’s weigh-in-motion technology and maintenance services are recognised as the best in our industry."

The contract is initially for four years and has an option of renewal for one additional year.

IRD president and CEO Terry Bergan said: “The Illinois Department of Transportation has been an IRD customer for many years.

“We are pleased to have been selected as their long-term WIM service provider.

“IRD’s weigh-in-motion technology and maintenance services are recognised as the best in our industry, and are key components for a successful statewide traffic data collection and enforcement programme.”

Currently, IDOT has thirty-four active IRD WIM systems that will be covered under this contract agreement.

The Canadian road traffic management system engineering company will carry out repair, maintenance, and service activities of the in-road scales, camera surveillance systems, and PrePass preclearance weighing systems.

This technology will support IDOT and the Illinois State Police in processing large volumes of commercial vehicles by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of their weigh station facilities.

The trucking industry will also benefit from this new system as it will lead to reduction of wait times, fuel costs, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
