German-based Union Tank Eckstein (UTA) has launched a solution for several toll systems, called Telepass EU.

The on-board unit (OBU) intended for Italy can be used for vehicles with more than 3.5 tonnes of permitted total weight.

Telepass EU cuts down the need for the VIAcard, thereby enabling payment of toll at all number barriers and highway exits in Italy.

"Drivers can reduce the number of toll boxes in their trucks and pass all toll stations without stopping."

Further, this OBU can be used in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and Liefkenshoektunnel in Belgium.

Parking fees can also be settled through the device at various guarded truck parking lots in Italy and France.

Additional toll systems will be added to this service in the future. Currently, the road toll on the A4 (Katowice-Krakow) in Poland is currently in preparation.

UTA marketing director Kay Otte said: "We are providing our customers with the opportunity to use an OBU in several toll systems with Telepass EU.

"This has several advantages.

"On one hand, drivers can reduce the number of toll boxes in their trucks and pass all toll stations without stopping.

"On the other hand, they can benefit from a discount of up to 50% over the cash price in some southwestern European countries."
