The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) in the US has announced that repaving works on State Route 520 will begin this month.

A total of seven contractor crews from Granite Construction will grind and repave sections of SR 520 as part of a $4m project.

WSDOT project engineer Mark Sawyer said: "These areas were last paved up to 20 years ago.

"Repaving it adds many more years to the highway’s lifespan as we continue to improve the corridor for drivers."

"With more than 100,000 vehicles using SR 520 each day, the pavement is rutted and cracked. Repaving it adds many more years to the highway’s lifespan as we continue to improve the corridor for drivers."

Works under the project include grinding off the top 2in of the existing pavement to remove cracks and ruts, as well as repaving the highway with new asphalt.

The route will also see the replacement of expansion joints on four bridges, installation of high-visibility striping and bridge deck repairs.

Granite Construction will also repave ten ramps, including most of the SR 520/I-405 interchange.

The project repavement work is expected to be complete later this year.
