Balfour Beatty, an infrastructure group headquartered in London, UK, has been awarded a five-year contract worth £150m by the Wiltshire Council to maintain motorways in the county.

Set to commence on 1 June 2013, the contract involves highway maintenance, grass cutting, grounds maintenance, street lighting and litter collection, in addition to dealing with winter weather, drainage and bridges.

This work was previously handled by four different organisations, including an in-house team.

As per the terms of the new contract, all work will be executed by Balfour Beatty Living Places, which had earlier carried out only the street lighting contract of the highways.

Wiltshire Council cabinet member for highways Dick Tonge said that the council looked forward to partnering with Balfour Beatty Living Places in order to ensure that vital services that affect the lives of the county’s residents are delivered by single contractor.

"The contract involves highway maintenance, grass cutting, grounds maintenance, street lighting and litter collection."

According to the council, employees who are already carrying out these services will be transferred to the new contract.

Balfour Beatty offers services that include project design, financing and management, engineering and construction, and facilities management, and employs 50,000 people across the world.

Established by Balfour Beatty in 2010, Balfour Beatty Living Places provides managed services to local authorities and associated public sector bodies.

In December 2012, Balfour Beatty was selected as the preferred bidder for a £200m highways maintenance contract by Suffolk County Council.

The five-year agreement, which will come into effect on 1 April 2013, involves design and implementation of highway maintenance and improvement works.
