Kapsch TrafficCom has announced the successful completion for the trial of its European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) in Poland, demonstrating its capabilities to a group of key European toll providers.

The demonstration by Kapsch TrafficCom, a provider of intelligent transportation systems, showed for the first time in a single system the standards for on-board unit (OBU), security, system architecture and back office.

EETS facilitates interoperability of tolling services throughout the European Union road network with the help of an EETS provider, with the option of a single contract, invoice and OBU.

Kapsch deployed an electronic tolling project in Poland in July 2011 called viaTOLL, which covers 2,200km of road and is the first road charging system compatible with EETS.

"EETS facilitates interoperability of tolling services throughout the European Union road network with the help of an EETS provider."

The service has allowed the Polish General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) to earn sufficient revenue and the Polish road network is now paying for itself.

The field trials in Poland tested the compatibility of EETS-personalised OBUs with the viaTOLL system.

Several EETS providers such as DKV, AS24, DVB Logpay, Euro Toll Service, ASFiNAG, Total, Telepass, Axxes, TRAFINEO and Eurowag attended the EETS demonstration in order to inspect the viaTOLL system and its suitability for use.

Kapsch TrafficCom COO Erwin Toplak said: "Thanks to our extensive expertise in ITS and strong local partners, we have been able to deliver and operate this EETS system that satisfies the highest quality demands and deliver benefits to toll operators."
