The Indian government has approved a budget of Rs 200 crore (approximately $41m) for a hi-tech traffic and communication network in and around the capital city Delhi, ahead of Commonwealth Games in October 2010.

The plan includes installing Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and an integrated data communication network in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Work will be completed in phases with a 210km road network of 87 roads and nearly 220 signalled intersections earmarked for the first phase of the installation work.

The plan will eventually cover a 30,000km road network and nearly 500 signalled intersections.

The new system is aimed at increasing safety, providing better information, reducing travel time and managing the increase in traffic to and from the city during the games.
